Automotive Cyber Security

Protecting vehicles from cyber attacks and making a difference in safe and secure mobility

With the emergence of software-defined vehicles (SDVs), in which vehicles are controlled by software, and the increasing number of connected cars, where vehicles are connected to a network, the risk of cyber attacks targeting vulnerabilities in vehicles is on the rise.
Panasonic Automotive Systems brings together the security technologies that the Panasonic Group has accumulated in various industries, such as digital home appliances and ICT, to the automotive field.
We will use our world-class technological capabilities to protect vehicles from cyber attacks that could lead to serious accidents.

Current state of automotive cyber security

Increased risk of cyber attacks

With the emergence of software-defined vehicles (SDVs), the size and complexity of automotive software is growing at an increasingly rapid pace. Under these circumstances, the risk of vulnerabilities lurking within vehicles increases.

More entry points for cyber attacks

Referred to as “connected cars,” more and more vehicles are connected to networks and integrated with external services. This increases the number of contact points between vehicles and the external world, which in turn increases the number of entry points for cyber attacks.

Cyber attacks have a direct impact on vehicle control

With the proliferation of automated driving and Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), cyber attacks exploiting these features are on the rise. Loss of vehicle control due to such attacks carries the risk of serious accidents.

Increased person-hours to meet international standards

International standards for automotive cyber security were established in June 2020. In Japan, all vehicles must comply with these standards starting from May 2026. This is expected to increase the time and person-hours required for the work.

Shortage of highly specialized automotive cyber security professionals

Automotive cyber security professionals require a combination of deep automotive knowledge and cutting-edge security expertise. However, the shortage of highly skilled talent in both areas is one of the biggest challenges facing the automotive industry.

Our capabilities

At Panasonic Automotive Systems, our automotive cyber security technology brings together the cyber security technologies that the Panasonic Group has accumulated in various industries. This includes security technologies that are essential for digital home appliances and ICT, such as AV equipment, mobile phones, and smartphones. In preparation for the widespread adoption of connected cars, we have been researching and developing automotive cyber security technology since 2014. Our automotive cyber security technology has unique strengths not found elsewhere.

Over 30 years of experience in embedded device security

The Panasonic Group has more than 30 years of commercial experience in security for embedded devices in the areas of digital home appliances and ICT. This track record is the result of our involvement in standardizing technical specifications, manufacturing and shipping products, and our experience confronting ever-evolving attacks.

Extensive Tier 1 commercial experience

As a security vendor, we are not only well-versed in automotive security technology, but also have extensive commercial experience as a Tier 1 company in developing and manufacturing in-vehicle systems, including infotainment systems and vehicle Electronic Control Units (ECUs). With our expertise in development and manufacturing, we can propose optimal automotive cyber security innovations that take a holistic view and consider all relevant factors, including productivity, cost, and lead time.

Collecting and analyzing cyber attack information across a wide range of business sectors

Our technologies are developed by analyzing real-world attacks on over 10 vehicle models as white-hat hackers, rather than simply predicting attacks from theory. We have also collected a large number of cyber attack tactics from other industries and applied this knowledge to the development of automotive cyber security technologies and services.

Delivering comprehensive security innovations

We provide innovative systems for every phase of the automotive lifecycle, from development to post-shipment (design, implementation, evaluation, manufacturing, and operation). We support further streamlining and high quality standardization for security measures by linking the input/output information in each phase.

Efficient implementation of legal and regulatory compliance for security measures

By leveraging our extensive expertise in product and technology development as a Tier 1 company well-versed with automotive cyber security, we deliver innovations that are more practical and meet legal and regulatory requirements promptly and effectively.

Ensuring safety and security in a mobility society with reliable technology

Analysis of patent data shows that our automotive cyber security technology is No. 1 in Japan, the U.S., and Europe. Our strong patent portfolio, both in terms of quality and quantity, and our solid technological capabilities, backed by our experience and track record, contribute to raising the level of cyber security in the automotive industry.

Technologies and innovations

Our VERZEUSE™ series Automotive Cyber Security Innovations combat cyber attacks and have already been evaluated and adopted by many car manufacturers. We will now introduce three technologies and innovations that have received a lot of attention in recent years.

Automated threat analysis in the development and design phase

Analyze cyber security risks for vehicles and in-vehicle devices in the early stages of development and quickly generate ISO/SAE 21434 compliant threat analysis results. Developers do not need to be security experts. Simply answer a multiple-choice questionnaire to determine specific requirements for appropriate security measures based on the characteristics of the in-vehicle devices.

Automated threat analysis in the development and design phase

Streamline response to vulnerabilities identified after shipping

Streamline response to vulnerabilities identified after shipping

Analyze the risks associated with vulnerabilities identified in shipped vehicles. Calculate possible cyber attack routes and impact using our proprietary analysis algorithm, and prioritize response. A key feature of this system is that it identifies security risks not only for individual ECUs but also for the entire vehicle.

Keep vehicles resilient and safe even under attack

In the unlikely event of a cyber attack on a vehicle, the system detects the attack and monitors and safeguards the vehicle so that control functions of the vehicle like driving, turning, and stopping remain unaffected. It protects critical vehicle functions from cyber attacks, ensuring a safe and secure environment for vehicle use.
