Panasonic Automotive Systems develops world’s first* integrated ANC system for both road and engine noise in series-hybrid vehicles, first adopted in Nissan’s all-new Elgrand
Yokohama, Japan, August 3, 2026 – Panasonic Automotive Systems Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Yokohama,Kanagawa, Japan; President: Masashi Nagayasu) today announced that it has developed the world’s first* integrated Advanced Active Noise Control (ANC) system capable of reducing both road noise and engine noise in a series-hybrid vehicle. Leveraging the company’s proprietary algorithms and industry-leading technological expertise, the integrated ANC system combines broadband noise cancellation with high- precision real-time control. The system has been adopted for the standard audio systems offered on the X and G grades of the all-new Elgrand for Japanese market from Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. This marks the first installation of the integrated ANC system in a production vehicle.
- * As of July 2026, based on Panasonic Automotive Systems' research.
Until now, no system has been available for series-hybrid vehicles that can control both road noise and engine noise. Because of their different frequency characteristics, road noise and engine noise have generally required separate, specialized control systems. The company's new ANC system controls both simultaneously in real time across a broad frequency range, allowing the system to detect and respond to changes in road-surface and driving conditions, helping maintain a quieter cabin.
[Product Features]
1. Industry-leading noise reduction through a proprietary broadband signal-processing algorithm that provides integrated control of road and engine noise
Accelerometers installed at various locations throughout the vehicle detect vibrations that are highly correlated with cabin noise. A proprietary signal-processing algorithm uses the acquired vibration signals to predict the resulting noise and calculate the appropriate control signals. The system then generates antiphase sound through the vehicle’s speakers, using sound-wave interference to reduce cabin noise effectively.
Conventionally, engine noise has been addressed using dedicated narrowband control methods targeting primarily low-frequency noise below 200 Hz. The newly developed technology integrates an accelerometer-based control system with the vehicle’s audio system, enabling broadband road and engine noise to be controlled by a single system.
This allows the system to track changes in road-surface and driving conditions, delivering stable noise-reduction performance through highly precise real-time control. Because the system does not target sounds unrelated to road or engine noise, occupants can continue to hear music, conversations, and phone calls clearly.
2. Highly precise vehicle-specific tuning delivers optimal noise-cancellation performance
The company’s engineers participate from the early stages of vehicle development, comprehensively analyzing the acoustic characteristics, body-vibration characteristics, and speaker characteristics unique to each vehicle and proposing the optimal placement of accelerometers and microphones, as well as the appropriate control-system design. This vehicle-specific tuning enables stable noise-reduction performance across a wide range of driving environments. As a solution that can be adapted flexibly to differences in vehicle structure and powertrain configuration, the system also provides automakers with greater design flexibility.
As a leading provider of noise-control solutions for the automotive industry, the company has worked to reduce a broad range of cabin noise by leveraging its industry-leading technologies. While its integrated ANC system has now been adopted for this latest vehicle, the company’s ANC technology has already been adopted by five or more automakers in Japan and overseas across 60+ vehicle models, contributing to enhanced “Joy in Motion” experiences inside the vehicle cabin. The company will continue working to deliver more refined and premium mobility experiences.
In April 2027, Panasonic Automotive Systems will change its company name and brand to Mobitera to further position the organization for accelerated growth and optimize its overall business portfolio.
